Samuel Jacob Sesanus Olsen, commonly known as Jacob Olsen (1 October 1904 - October 13, 1994) was a Faroese teacher, writer and translator. He was deeply engaged in the local community and the Faroe Islands as a whole.
== Biography ==
Jacob Olsen was born on 1 October 1904 in Sandavági, Faroe Islands. His parents were Peter Joen Pauli Olsen, fisherman, from Sandavágur and Lisbeth Olsen, born Magnussen, from Leynar.
Before Jacob Olsen studied at Teachers College, he worked 15 months in business in Sandavágur and was at sea for a single year. In 1923 he was admitted to teacher education at Teachers College (Føroya Læraraskúli) in Tórshavn and graduated with a teaching diploma in 1926.〔http://oldsetur.snar01.t3hot.dk/index.php?id=1725 UNIVERSITY OF THE FAROE ISLANDS, year group 1926.〕
1 September 1926 he was hired by Tórshavn's School. 1 February 1961, he was Vice Principal at the same school and held office until his retirement 31 October 1971, at the age of 67.
1928-1931 Jacob Olsen was with Sámal Johansen founder and editors for the Barnablaðið (The Child Magazine).〔http://snar.fo/alfroei/alfroei/rithoevundar/olsen-jacob-ur-sandavagi/ Føroyski Undirvísingarportalurin Snar.〕 In light of numerous children stories published in this magazine, these stories became the foundation for publishing the book Nú Breddar, which Faroese Union of Teachers released in 1964 on the occasion of Jacob Olsen's 60th birthday.
1932-1933 Jacob Olsen studied English, geography and animal- and plant field at the State Teacher's College. Later, the study in English was extended for another four years.
1957-1958 Jacob Olsen was studying English, geography and library at the Danish University of Education.
Furthermore, Jacob Olsen served as member and President of the Health Commission in Froðba parish and changing member in the Equation Commission.
Jacob Olsen was moreover an organ organist at the Church of Tvøroyri for almost 25 years.
In a number of years he was external examiner in written English at secondary school and 9th - and 10th grade.
Has also done several translation works between the languages English, Danish, Faroese and Norwegian. For example, Jacob Olsen translated the children book ''Kubbin'' by Anne-Cath. Vestly from Norwegian to Faroese.
Jacob Olsen was on 1 October 1933 married to Olga Maria, born Hansen, daughter of Sigvald and Hansina Hansen from Tvøroyri. The father was born in Stokke in Norway. Olga Olsen was born on 16 October 1903 in Tvøroyri.
Jacob Olsen moved with his wife to Copenhagen in the early 1970s, where he continued his translation work, and gave private lessons in English until his natural death, 13 October 1994, 90 years old. His wife Olga Olsen died of cerebral haemorrhage in the year of 1978.
